My mother Lan (which means “Orchid” in Czech) doesn’t speak Czech and doesn’t like Czech food. My dad, Tot (“Good” in Czech) understands Czech, but has problems when dealing with the local authorities. My parents arrived here just before the revolution and worked in factories. After the revolution my father set up his own business. He began with a shop selling mixed goods with extended opening hours. Later on he opened a restaurant offering Asian specialities.
Basically, what my parents say goes. There’s not room for discussion. I’ve also got a “rented Granny” – Mrs Moudrá, my private Czech teacher.
