Magda: Ah, well that’s something. I thought all Muslims had to adhere to Sharia.

Jami: We adhere to Sharia in so far as we feel it is right to do so according to our conscience and tradition. And of course we can’t break Czech laws. And obviously, we also go to see the Imam.

Magda: And what do you talk about with him?

Jami: Well, once, for instance, when I was on a school trip I ate a meatball because I didn’t know it was made of pork.

Magda: Oh no! But Muslims can’t eat that!

Jami: Exactly, and it really made me worried, too. But the Imam reassured me, and said that I just have to be more careful next time. He said that the most important thing is to believe in God - we call him Allah - and know that He is well aware that I didn’t do it on purpose.

Magda: laughing: So maybe you are a little bit of a fundamentalist?

Jami: laughing: Do you want a slap?! I most certainly am not! But some rules just have to be followed, and not eating pork is no big deal. It’s just our tradition that we don’t eat it, the same as like your friends would probably look at you strangely if you ate grasshoppers and caterpillars, because it’s something people here aren’t used to.
